Mini Melt-downs---How to Avoid a Food Emergency

I’m from a family that genetically, or simply by lifestyle, battles being overweight.  I tell people that I gain weight when I smell food.  Our society is food obsessed.  Did you know we could save $2500 a year if we didn’t buy fast food for lunch every day?

One of my favorite fast food meals is from Subway.  I love those foot longs and even though I have it on flat bread the meal is still a whopping 1233 calories including chips and soda, but no cookie.  I thought I was doing OK, but alas in 30 minutes I devoured almost my total daily caloric allotment during my weight loss phase.  I guess Subway’s Jared is wrong about subway unless you get only “diet” items.

So here’s my confession, while on my business trip to Soldotna Alaska this past week I indulged in my fast food weakness, Subway.  Needless to say I didn’t lose any 1/10th of a pound that day.  I call these events mini-meltdowns.

The key to not allowing mini’s to become week long binges is to get back on the weight loss program the next day.  Otherwise diet-depression sets in and we go back to stress eating and comfort food.  Funny thing is after it goes through our mouth and provides the “comfort” it settles, perhaps I should say clogs, in the digestive-tract and becomes very uncomfortable.

So here’s the trick to steady weight loss:  when you have a mini-meltdown go right back to your nutrition program the very next day.  Don’t redouble your efforts by starving yourself or over exercising, just get back on your regular program.  Within a few days your body is back in the weight-loss zone.  This works for me every time and that is the difference in keeping me on a steady downward curve of weight loss.

I have occasional mini-meltdowns but have learned to change my lifestyle by getting back to my good nutrition program quickly. It has become my life pattern and will be from here on out over the next few decades.  Good nutrition equals good health and energy.
